Inspired by John 17 and the message “The Purpose of Being In” by Loise Kock.

> “That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us…”
— John 17:21 (NKJV)
There’s something powerful about the word “in.”
It’s a small word—often overlooked—but when Jesus prayed in John 17, He placed eternity inside it.
To be “in” something is to be shaped by it, affected by it, and anchored through it. Whether it’s a family, a church, a calling, or a covenant—what you’re “in” determines how you live and who you become.
In John 17, Jesus prays not only for His disciples, but for all who would believe in Him—including us today. He doesn’t just pray for strength or comfort —He prays for oneness, for unity, and for a shared life with the Father.
Eternal Life Is Now
“Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.”
— John 17:3 (AMP)
We often think of eternal life as something we’ll experience later, in heaven. But Jesus tells us plainly: eternal life begins with knowing God—personally, intimately, deeply.
This knowing isn’t just head knowledge. It’s relational. It transforms us from the inside out.
To know God is to live in Him, walk with Him, and be changed by Him.

Set Apart, Not Set Aside
“They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
— John 17:16–17 (NKJV)
Jesus makes it clear that we are in the world, but not of it. That means we are not removed from the world’s challenges—but we are not defined by its values.
We are:
Sanctified in truth
Strengthened by the Word
Covered in Christ’s joy
Protected from evil
Made one with the Father and the Son
This is what it means to be in Christ—to carry His peace, His purpose, and His presence wherever we go.
United with Christ, Anchored in Truth
“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Colossians 1:27 (NKJV)
Unity with Christ is not just theological—it’s deeply personal.
It’s the source of our:
Joy
Identity
Peace
Confidence
When we are disconnected from Christ, we begin to feel the weight of the world. But when we remain in Him, we are able to stand, to love, and to live with purpose.
What Are You In?
Are you in alignment with God’s Word?
Are you in step with His Spirit?
Are you in covenant with Christ and His body?
Or have you unknowingly stepped “into” worry, comparison, fear, or compromise?
The world may try to pull you in many directions, but Jesus prayed that you would be one with the Father and the Son. That unity is your strength. That oneness is your hope.
A Present and Eternal Purpose
“I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love…”
— Romans 8:38 (NLT)
We are not forsaken in this world—we are positioned.
We are called to live in Christ now, in the power of eternal life today—not just one day in heaven.
And this eternal life isn’t just for us. It carries the power to:
Break strongholds
Heal relationships
Transform generations
Testify to the goodness of God
Final Reflection:
Take a moment today and ask:
Who or what am I “in”?
Is my life shaped more by the Word or the world?
Am I walking in the joy and peace that comes from unity with Christ?
Let’s return to that place of abiding. Let’s live from the center of His love, His truth, and His purpose.
Because in Christ, we have all we need.
