The Power of Faith and Obedience

The story of Jericho showcases two contrasting paths: Joshua’s obedience to God’s instructions to conquer Jericho and Rahab’s faith in turning away from her past and trusting the God of Israel.

Both individuals broke free from their circumstances by choosing faith over fear and obedience over doubt.

“The Lord said to Joshua, ‘See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands… March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days…’”
Joshua 6:2-5

Joshua’s Faith and Obedience

Joshua led the Israelites as they transitioned from wandering in the wilderness to stepping into God's promise. Jericho’s walls were not brought down by military might but through obedient faith, following God’s unusual instructions to walk in silence for six days and shout on the seventh. Joshua’s actions broke conventional norms, focusing on God's command rather than human logic or tradition.

“Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, ‘Are you for us or for our enemies?’
‘Neither,’ he replied, ‘but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’ Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, ‘What message does my Lord have for his servant?’”
Joshua 5:13-15

Rahab’s Declaration of Faith

Rahab, a Canaanite, was raised in a culture of idolatry but chose to acknowledge the God of Israel, declaring her faith by sheltering the spies. Her trust in God’s power led to the salvation of her family and placed her in the lineage of Jesus. This act of faith, demonstrated by her courage, stands as a reminder that God values sincere belief over background or past mistakes.

“The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent.”

Joshua 6:17

Moving from Religion to Relationship

God desires a relationship with His people, not just adherence to rules. The law given to Moses helped guide Israel’s relationship with God, showing what holiness looks like. Jesus came to fulfill the law, demonstrating that love and grace are at the heart of true obedience. Today, we are called to go beyond rituals and develop a personal relationship with God, allowing His grace to

guide our hearts.

“For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”

Romans 6:14

Breaking Down Walls Through Faith

Just as the Israelites saw the walls of Jericho fall through obedient faith, we too can face the “walls” in our lives—obstacles, doubts, and spiritual strongholds—by aligning ourselves with God’s will. By stepping out of conventional limits and trusting God, we allow His power to work in us, transforming challenges into testimonies of His faithfulness.

“When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.”
Joshua 6:20

Living Beyond Religion

Jesus fulfilled the law to free us from legalism, inviting us into a life of grace and truth. Rahab and Joshua’s stories illustrate the freedom that comes with true faith—standing firm on God’s promises and relying on His grace rather than human efforts or rules. Let us seek a relationship that goes beyond religion, embracing the freedom and responsibility of living by grace.

“You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”

2 Corinthians 3:3
